Food Porn

Food Porn what a title .... The term “Food Porn,” believe it or not, wasn’t coined in the age of Instagram, but was in fact first entered into the cultural vortex by feminist critic Rosalind Coward, in her the 1984 book Female Desire. Food porn, defined, means images of food presented in such an appealing and, well, titillating way — more delicious than health-conscious — that that food could substitute for sex. But I do love the new craze of taking photos of that delicious food before you attack it. As the cook you put a lot of effort into selecting the ingredient, cooking and creating that sometimes its nice when your guests oooh and arrrrh and take the pic to bolster their social media pages ....

Social media, after all, has made us hyper-visual creatures. According to the website ScienceDaily.com, “The mere sight of delicious food stimulates the appetite. A study on healthy young men has documented that the amount of the neurosecretory protein hormone ghrelin in the blood increases as a result of visual stimulation through images of food.”.... mmmm so could the other form of visual photography that they seem to enjoy.

The concept of ‘food porn,’ or a good photo of food that will make your followers crave, if not hate you for making them feel hungry, has emerged since the dawn of social media and camera phones. And it’s not just foodies or food enthusiasts that adhere to the art of food photography—food business owners are even more competitive in getting perfect shots of their products. After all, their goal is to make their food delicious even if they’re intangible on cyberspace.

So you might be surprised to learn that some restaurants are now banning photos of their food. Why you ask?

Earlier this year, I recall reading a few articles about food photography bans in certain restaurants. Many restaurant owners feel that the use of flash photography may ruin the experience of fellow diners in the restaurant. For example, someone proposing to his girlfriend may be distracted by the flash going off on next table. Whilst trying to click the perfect shot, the dish may get cold or the ice cream might melt, and therefore disrupt both the flow of service and/or taste of dish. Additionally dim lighting may make it harder to capture beautiful shots, and ultimately underplay a dish’s essence.

But isn't it good for business? A pop-up diner The Picture House opened in Soho, London, as the world’s very first pay-by-picture restaurant. Diners will be given tips on food photography by seasoned professionals and will then be invited to get their meal for free if they upload photos of their food with a customised promotional hashtag to Instagram.

There is a new word that the oxford dictionary is bound to include,

"Foodie Porn Star" .... definition, noun, a person who is visual excited about food who can usually be found brunching at boutique cafes and dining at restaurants. loves to snap every meal they eat and every coffee they sip, generates a stream of posts, they are frequent users of hashtags.....
